Jason Day, brilliant designer of video games, is not only a confirmed bachelor, but he's as gay as a maypole. One wouldn't think being saddled with his precocious four-year-old nephew for four weeks would be enough to throw him off-kilter.
Wrong. Timmy, Jason's nephew, is a true handful.
But just when Timmy and Uncle Jason begin to bond, and Jason feels he's getting a grip on this babysitting business once and for all, he's thrown for a loop by a couple of visitors - one from Tucson, the other from beyond the grave.
I'm sorry. Say what?
Toss a murder, a hot young stud, an unexpected love affair, and a spooky-ass ghost with a weird sense of humor into Jason's summer plans, and you've got the makings of one hell of a ride.

What can I say that the first reviewer didn't except that I really enjoyed reading this book--and I read it straight through from dinnertime to bedtime. Couldn't put it down. It starts out so funny--Young Timmy is a character for the ages--so smart and smarty pants, but charming as only a little kid can be and his poor gay, single Uncle Jason--his temporary babysitter--almost doesn't know what hit him. Their interchanges are hilarious as are Jason's inner thoughts about taking care of a 4 year old. John Inman writes humor so well--that dry "don't see it coming til it hits you upside the head" comedy and snark. He writes hilarious and ridiculous situations like nobody else. Truly laugh out loud funny. The book takes a serious turn about a third of the way in, opening into an intriguing and truly spooky ghost story. Plus the romance starts to gently heat up--always a good thing. I liked the main characters, Jason and Sam and Timmy, of course! (Would love to see these guys in a follow-up...hint hint) They were all so well-drawn and relatable (not sure that's a word, but oh well, it's midnight)--the romance was charming and sweet, and sexy, but when the challenge comes to their relationship, it's heart-rending.
What John Inman is also good at is letting a story unfold slowly, foreshadowing subtly, giving intriguing little hints, then throwing the reader off the rails in a deliciously scary moment that reveals just a little more of the story. By then, the poor reader is clutching her Kindle breathlessly, hands a little sweaty. When the dogs tart to bark...wait...different story. Anyway, I loved this book!

Spirit (Audible Audio Edition) John Inman John Anthony Davis Dreamspinner Press LLC Books Reviews
I have to admit I saw the ending coming a mile away even if Jason didn't. But it didn't ruin the novel for me. It made it even more suspenseful and poignant, watching Jason's slow realization of the truth. This has Inman's lovely wit, sweet romance, and an adorable geriatric dog, but it is also a fairly chilling ghost story and mystery. And I mean I got real chills reading this late last night! Also, I love how Inman never fails to make the bad guys receive their just desserts. Pun intended in the case of Loving Hector! ) He dispenses justice Old Testament style in satisfyingly violent ways!
His relationship with his wise and sarcastic uncle is pretty funny as he uses his not so guileless wiles to outsmart and charm the adults in his life. The ghost story is interesting, although not very spooky. I am sort of an atmosphere junkie, and I never got any good scares out of this book. A perfect ghost story should leave the reader with an unsolved mystery and unexplained phenomenon for the best effect. This ghost was pretty obvious about who he was and what he wanted. He did use certain creative aspects of communication. The crime elements of this story were quite shocking and horrible, so it made an interesting balance with the humorous aspects. The romance was sudden and could have stood a bit more development, but overall it was a book I couldn't put down until the end. I will have to wait and see if I'd ever want to read it again. My opinion about a book the day after I have read it and then six months or a year later can change dramatically. This was a nice change for this sort of book. ;p I would certainly check out other books by this author now.
I have read the other two reviews, and will try to avoid repeating them, but I just had to write a review on this wonderful book. I SO loved Timmy, particularly his interchanges with his Uncle Jason, a man who is inexperienced with children but clearly has a natural affinity for them. I laughed so hard I snorted and tears were popping out of my eyes! The conversation about the "'stortion" coming from "Pampers" just cracked me up!!! For those of us who have raised four-year olds at some point in our lives, Timmy's honesty, energy, fearlessness and yes, deviousness, rang true. There was also a lot of heart in this story, in the love between Jason and his nephew, the love Paul carried beyond death for his son and his son's love for his non-corporeal daddy, and the lovely budding relationship between Jason and Sam...all contribute to the truly special nature of this book. The cherry on top is a shivery ghost story and a couple of top-notch villains. You are absolutely cheating yourself if you don't read this book. Do it!
What do you do with a gay romance novel in which the best character is a four-year-old?
Give it five stars, that’s what.
John Inman is one of my favorite writers, and this gentle story about love transcending death is surely one of his best. “Spirit” made me think a good deal of F.E. Feeley, Jr.’s “Objects in a Rear View Mirror.” Both are heartfelt, realistic, genuinely scary ghost stories that focus on a young gay couple in what should be their dream house.
Except, as I noted above, for the four-year-old. Timmy, who is left with his uncle Jason for the first time while his mother takes a month-long vacation with her boyfriend, is a remarkable character. Inman captures the reality of a smart pre-schooler, infusing him with the kind of innocent joy—as well as the mischief—that insures that the reader will fall in love with him.
When another uncle—Sam—appears to further disrupt Jason’s slightly off-kilter world, the light-hearted comic tone of the book shifts slightly into one of romance. But a third shift takes the book down a darker road. While light of touch, Inman manages to ratchet up the anxiety in subtle increments, never losing the comedic overtones that keep the book from getting too dark.
Inman’s writing is very good. He makes Jason and Sam palpably real, and shows us the kind of men they are, through their words and their actions. But the surprise treasure in this book is Timmy. I can’t remember when a child character mattered so much to me.
Inman has earned his five stars with “Spirit.”
